Since 1.8 was released there has not been a stable version of a Bukkit server to run Octopia on. I wasn't prepared to use any dodgy mods and builds on the server as all it would result in would be crashes and errors.
Now that there is a stable build, we are in the position to upgrade to a 1.8 server build and to make 1.8 items available to use on the server.
We have a few options on how to proceed here.
We start on a fresh new 1.8 world.
We upgrade to 1.8 but do not have a new world.
We upgrade to 1.8, we do not reset the main world. But we will add an additional world for 1.8 resource collection, which would get regenerated regularly.
After having discussions with some staff and players, the third option seems the most popular and that is what I would ideally like to go ahead with. So I can ascertain what other players think, there is a poll attached to this post and I would be grateful if you could vote on an option.
I am back from my holiday and on the server again.
Today all plugins have been updated and are on the latest stable builds.
The spawn is currently in the process of being remodelled slightly, to improve the layout and make it easier to navigate for new players.
It has been requested a lot, so I have decided to add Lockette to the server, for chest locking purposes. Please change your chests from being locked with a ChestShop sign, to being locked via a Lockette sign. Simply right click a chest with a sign, to lock it.
During some maintenance earlier, a bug was found with Towny and the economy plugin, resulting in some towns balances being reset to $100. This is an infuriating bug, which I am not able to roll back. Upkeep has been turned off until all towns are reimbursed.
Please can the town MAYOR email me at email@example.com stating the amount they had before. Please do not lie, as this can be checked (with great difficulty) if...
Over the coming week or so I am going to be cleaning up the server a bit. It has been a while since I fully optimised all of the plugins and server back ends properly.
This time will give me the perfect opportunity to add any new plugins, or to change anything, so I am looking for new ideas and suggestions of things which could be added to the server to improve it. I would be grateful if anyone who has any suggestions, could make a post in the suggestions forum.
Please post only in the suggestions forum, so I can keep track of suggestions easily, otherwise they may not get seen properly.
It has been a while since I have done an update post, due to my a levels. Which, to my delight, end this Monday.
Over the last couple of days I have made a couple of changes to the website, mostly technical. One which you should be able to see is that we now have a SSL certificate, which means the data between you and the website is secure. You can tell by looking in the address tab and seeing a padlock of some sort and 'https'.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask all users to submit any suggestions or ideas they may have to us. We are constantly looking for ways to improve and the player's voice is what matters the most. If you wish to make a suggestion, please do not comment it to this post, instead make a new thread in the suggestions section. This is so it can be easily discussed. The suggestions section is here.
Finally, we are also looking for new staff members, so if you would like to...
On June the 5th, the Reset the Net movement is working to help make the internet more secure for everyone.
People are sick and tired of the NSA and other government organisation's mass surveillance techniques. We can make it easier for user's privacy to be kept secure. The Reset for Net movement is promoting proper security for users and websites alike. I have signed a pledge to protect octopia.net with SSL technologies in order to maintain your privacy while using the website. This new protection will be set up as soon as possible.
I urge you all to watch the video and read into the movement
In the next month or so myself and the others owners are going to be taking our AS level exams. I am going to stop with the server development from about the 1st of May until the 10th of June. Quite simply it means, don't expect to have any new features during this time, or to see me as active on the server. Regular plugin updates will still occur and if there is an update to minecraft, the server will be updated quickly aswell.
Staff will, of course, still be around to assist you and I will check my forum messages regularly as well so if you need to contact me, do so through here please.
This brief hiatus from the server is going to help me focus more on my exams, but when I am back, expect to have new bits and bobs added straight away.
As you can see from the post's title, Puffin has decided to resign from his role as Senior Staff. This is due to several reasons, but the main being he wishes to cut down on his time on the computer. I would like to thank him for his service to helping the server with a wide variety of tasks. He will be missed and the server will not be the same with out him.
Puffin has been rewarded with a lifetime Diamond rank as thanks for his help.
Myself and the other owners would like to wish him the best in any future endeavours.
It is with great delight that I announce the two year anniversary of Octopia. Two years ago on this day myself and the other Owners founded Octopia. We started off as a tiny basic Vanilla server and over the last two years, have grown into the community and server we have today.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for everything they have done for the server. Without the help of donators, staff and active members, the server would not be what it is today. I would like to especially thank any player who has donated. Donating has allowed us to stay up and afford upgrades, without them the server would simply not be up.
This weekend we will be hosting some events, these have not yet been decided completely, and more information will be posted nearer the time. I will also be launching a sale on all donator ranks. I hope to squeeze in time to do some videos or even a livestream, like we did for last year, as well.
